Owing to the strategic location of Rota, it has been a transit point for many different cultures and civilizations. In spite of all of this, it is very difficult to trace our origins because few archaeological remains have been found within the city limits. However, existing remains date back to the Prehistory, the Metal Ages to be more precise.

“Astaroth” was the first known denomination of Rota, whilst the current name was given by Christians. King Sancho IV “The Brave gave the town to Alonso Pedro de Guzman “The Good”, who subsequently gave the town to his daughter Isabel as a dowry when she married Fernan Perez Ponce de Leon, Master of Alcantara and first Lord of Marchena. In 1780 the ninth Duke of Arcos passed away without issue and as a result, the town was given to the Duke of Osuna, whose lordship was abolished in 1823.
